Attack of the to-do lists
September 29, 2010
Last weekend I found myself overwhelmed with things to remember, and unable to prioritize which ones to keep in my brain. It got to the point where someone gave me one more piece of information, and I just gave up.
I’m sure some of you can remember what you need to do, and can prioritize, but for those of us who have trouble with that, I’m working on a method that I can use.
- Do small tasks as soon as you receive them, so they never go on your list
- Keep a master to-do list (A small notebook that can fit in your pocket) where you write everything that you need to do. At this point, neatness or layout are not a priority, just get everything on there
- Sit down every day (I do it right before I leave work) and take a fresh piece of paper. Look through your list and pick a few things to do, things you expect to get done that night
- Leave the master to-do list in your purse until tomorrow. Only look at it if you finish everything on your nightly list.
This has helped me become a bit more efficient over the past week. It takes more time but offers me the peace of mind so I don’t have to declare “to-do list bankruptcy”.
